Parent power

The recent media coverage about school dinners has drawn attention to the quality and nutritional value of the food our children are being served at school. As parents we can all do our bit to encourage schools to provide healthy choices for our children.

The Food Standards Agency recommends that we eat two portions of fish each week, one of which should be an oily fish, like salmon or mackerel. Fish is an excellent source of omega-3. Oily fish are one of the best sources, but omega-3 is also found in white fish, such as Alaskan Pollock, and shellfish.

Is your child eating sustainable seafood at school?

Fish is good for you and forms part of healthy, balanced diet. But in some places fish stocks are running out. One way we can help protect the marine environment is by eating fish that has come from a sustainable source. Buying seafood that displays the MSC eco-label helps to support fisheries that have been independently certified as being well-managed and sustainable.

There are lots of ways you can help, simply by spreading the word about Fish & Kids and choosing MSC-labelled fish:

  1. Contact the head teacher or school meal provider and ask for sustainable, MSC-labelled seafood to be put on the menu in your child’s school. Over 2,200 schools currently use the MSC eco-label on their menus to identify fish that has been certified as sustainable.
  2. Tell the teachers about Fish & Kids! We provide free curriculum-linked education resources and it’s a great way to teach children about marine issues.
  3. Send people links to website at www.fishandkids.org where they can find out more, download resources, play games and have fun!
  4. Look for the MSC eco-label next time you go shopping, and try to buy sustainable seafood whenever you can. Visit www.msc.org for further information.
