Business benefits
Promote school meal uptake
In the aftermath of Jamie Oliver's 'Feed me better' campaign there was a marked decrease in uptake of school meals in many areas of the UK. Tell a good story about sustainable sourcing of fish and show off to parents by using the MSC eco-label on the menu.
Meet government targets on sustainability
Within the Public Sector Food Procurement Inititiative (PSFPI), buyers are encouraged to ask for environmental assurance schemes in contracts to support sustainable food production. The MSC eco-labelling programme is the only fisheries assurance scheme in the world that offers a third-party, independent evaluation of the sustainability of fisheries. Choosing MSC-labelled fish for your menu helps you to demonstrate leadership in sustainable sourcing. Defra has also made funding available for fisheries that want to prove their sustainability, and has part funded the Fish & Kids project.
Educate the children and parents about food
Choosing sustainable seafood and adding the MSC ecolabel to your school's menu makes the link between food and education. Help the children to 'tick' their green boxes and use your menu to explain how the simple act of selecting MSC fish can make a real difference to the health of our oceans. To compliment your sourcing decisions, you can also arrange for classroom education packs to be sent to all schools to help teachers communicate the benefits of eating MSC fish. Children can learn in a fun, accessible way about where their food comes from, and take the message home to their parents.
