We all love a trip to the seaside, but how many of us stop to think about the problem of overfishing? Kids love fish fingers, but do they know where fish comes from? One of the aims of the Fish & Kids project is to teach children about marine life and the need to protect the oceans. By choosing MSC-labelled fish, families can support sustainable fishing and play their part in protecting the oceans.
The National Curriculum provides plenty of scope for your child to learn about ocean life, fishing and where seafood comes from. Making children aware of the problem of overfishing at school is a positive step in the right direction. But there are plenty of other ways you and your family can help to protect the marine environment.
An easy way to start is to look for the MSC eco-label next time you go shopping. That way you can be sure that the fish you are buying has come from a well-managed and sustainable source, which has been checked by independent scientists.
