About Fish & Kids

Summary of Fish & Kids

Fish & Kids encourages schools and restaurants in England to serve sustainable, MSC labelled seafood. The project promotes sustainable seafood product diversity by working with the foodservice industry. Through Fish & Kids, children, teachers, parents and caterers are given the opportunity to find out why choosing sustainable seafood is vital for the future of fish, fishing communities and the environment.

Objectives of the Project

  • Increase awareness of sustainable seafood issues.
  • Increase availability of sustainable seafood menu options.
  • Provide a credible way of tracing the products from boat to plate.

What has happened so far?

Brakes, as foodservice partner for the project, have intensively developed a range of MSC certified products suitable for primary schools.

Surrey Commercial Services, an organisation that provides school meals to around 350 primary schools in Surrrey, is participating in the trial of this project. Sustainable fish fingers, supplied by Brakes, are the only fish fingers to be served in these Surrey primary schools at the moment.

The MSC has developed education materials, available here, to promote a whole school approach to food and sustainable development.
